Obituary of Calvin Delano Shields

Calvin Delano Shields was born in Hurt, VA, on January 27, 1935. He died in Lynchburg General Hospital on October 19, 2019.

He was the 9th and final child of Henry Buck and Ruthie Lynch Shields.

He grew up in Hurt and attended Hurt and Gretna Schools.

During the Korean war, he volunteered for the U.S. regular army. They trained him to be a paratrooper. He jumped in Korea and injured both feet. He also served in Japan.

He received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Medal, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

When he came home, he married and fathered three daughters, Pam Shields Byrd, 310 Winterberry Drive, Roanoke, VA 24018, Chris Shields Hathaway, West Virginia and Kim Shields of North Carolina.

He had four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He sold cars for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gin-rummy.

He had many nephews, nieces, and cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and five brothers, Howard, Paul, Wesley, Frank, and Harold. Two sisters, Bernice Shields Reid, and Estelle Shields Alford.

Andrew Jackson Shields of Altavta is the only survivor of the nine siblings.
