I am so saddened by this - I just ran across it while searching for some of the people I knew back in High School in Macon, Georgia. Mr. Coursey was one of my favorite teachers of all time, not only in High School but in college at UGA and post-graduate studies in New York City at the School of Visual Arts. I have had some fabulous instructors and mentors along the way but as my 11th Grade English Teacher at Stratford Academy, Mr Coursey stands out. His positive influence on me at a time when I needed it most cannot be understated. He was a beacon of light in the darkness that often fell upon my High School years, especially at a school that back then placed little value on creativity, critical thinking, and individuality. With no courses in Art or Music even offered, the emphasis was on conformity. And football. That is not to say there were no other very good teachers there - the educational standard at Stratford was high and the faculty was quite solid. But the others just taught us the lessons while Mr Coursey related to us on our level - he respected his students and that feeling was mutual. He had a way of challenging us that opened our eyes to the possibility that learning was actually fun and a reward in itself, independent of grades and report cards. By connecting English Literature to the lyrics of current pop songs of the day and contemporary poets he drew a straight line from the past to the present. He inspired me greatly and I only wish that I could have told him simply, thank you. Keith Bennett

Bill hired me as their IT guy at JRDS about 15 years ago and was an awesome person to work for. I'm sorry I didn't hear about his passing until now, but I know he was cared for and loved by many. I always enjoyed listening to him tell me stories of racing and his travels. He was a man of endless patience and understanding. Rest in peace Bill, I feel honored to count myself among the people who knew you.

I worked with Bill for 10 years. He allowed me to be Lower School Head. He told me I was to help make my teachers the best they could be. I loved our long talks about his travels and his son, daughter- in- law and grandchild. He raised money and expanded our school. Bill had a wonderful smile and was very kind individual. He loved and cared so much for Nancy. To all the family, I send my love and prayers.

Mr. Coursey was Headmaster of JRDS during my sons attendance. Michael always had a positive experience during his education there, and Mr. Coursey was a big part of that. Sympathy to his family.

Nancy,
I absolutely adored Bill as our Headmaster when I was on the JRDS Board for 6 years, many years ago. His energy, ideas, integrity, and can do positive attitude were infectious. I will always remember him as a superior educational leader. Thank you for sharing him with us.

He was our English Lit teacher at Stratford in Macon and was a wonderful teacher and man. He had a great intellect and, as so happens often, a great sense of humor to accompany it. We students respected him greatly and responded to him. Peace and blessings to the family.

Mr Coursey was my English teacher in the early 70s at Stratford. He Was our teacher and our friend. Remarkably I was asking about his whereabouts about two weeks ago when reminiscing with a classmate. I’m very sorry to hear about his passing. He made a big impression on many students.
