Obituary of Annie Blanks King

Annie Laurie Blanks King, 92, of Evington passed away Friday, March 8, 2019.

Born May 20, 1926 in Halifax County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late George Henry Blanks and Laura Ferguson Blanks.

She began working out of high school as a telephone operator in Richmond, VA and later in the Lynchburg area she worked variously at Babcock & Wilcox, River Ridge Mall, and Dunman Wholesale Floral Supply, as well as working in the cafeteria at Yellow Branch Elementary and driving a bus for Campbell County Public Schools.  She devoted a majority of her life to the unequivocal care of and unwavering support and advocacy for her beloved youngest son who was intellectually and physically disabled.

A long-time member of Meade Memorial Methodist Church, she was also a founding member of the Lynchburg Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC).  She was an avid reader and an excellent cook and gardener who enjoyed trying new recipes and building an extensive cookbook collection.

She was preceded in death by her husband Horace Rutledge King and son James Harold (Jim) Hundley as well as by three brothers, James, Charles, and Allen Blanks and a sister Margaret Shields.

She is survived by two sons and their wives: Vernon S. (Tommy) Thompson and Rebecca Thompson of Browns Summit, NC, and Marshall Alan (Matt) Thompson and Susan Thompson of Lynchburg; two daughters, Mary Frances Thompson Garner of Lynchburg, and Anne Trice Thompson Akers and her husband Rodney Akers of Franklinton, NC, sisters Becky McDaniel of Lynchburg, Nancy Heath of South Boston, Ruth Carwile of Richmond, VA, and a brother George Henry Blanks of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The family extends special appreciation to the staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their compassionate care for their mother over the last several months.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meade Memorial United Methodist Church or LARC.

A celebration of life will be conducted by Rev. Keon Huh on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Mead Memorial Methodist Church in Lynchburg at 2 pm.  The family will receive friends an hour before the service in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory, Waterlick Chapel, 237-2722, is serving the family.
